Coco Chanel made famous "The Little Black Dress" in 1926 even thou Queen Victoria was wearing black at Prince Albert's funeral in England in 1861 which she continued each day until her death in 1901.

It then became fashionable in high society during the Edwardian era and even by those in the middle and lower classes who wish to be accepted by following Queen Victoria's example.
